  • Position Overview/Duties:
      • INTRODUCTION: Serves as Engineering Technician (Electrical) responsible for a variety of electrical features at the Fish Dispersal Barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Engineering Technicians are responsible for the maintenance and repair of critical systems utilized to prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species into the Great Lakes.

      POSITION: Engineering Technician GS-0802-11/12

      • PERIOD OF ASSIGNMENT: PERMANENT
      • DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT/DUTIES:
        • Carries out the full range of technical engineering functions associated with the mechanical and related electrical features of facility operations. Electrical systems include emergency power systems to include diesel generators automatic transfer switches and bypass/isolation switches, switchboards, feeder panels, lighting and appliance branch circuit panel boards, indoor dry-type transformers, rectifiers, motor control centers, feeder bus ducts and programmed lighting; alternating circuit (AC) systems equipment include 120/240-volt single-phase, 120/208/277/480-volt three-phase, and 4,160-volt distribution systems. DC equipment includes12-to-2000-volt circuits.:
        • This is a hands-on maintenance position. Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests, and adjusts a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment.
        • Applies troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques and equipment to identify source of problems and interprets blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, manuals and other product service materials.
        • Tests circuits and equipment by using voltmeters, ammeter, and oscilloscope. Measures, cuts, bends, and installs conduits and inserting, splicing and connecting wires to equipment and other electrical devices.

      • APPLICABILITY/AREA OF CONSIDERATION: This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

      • APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS:
        • Basic Requirement Specialized experience includes technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.
        • Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents.
        • In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirement listed below:
        • Experience Requirement:
          • To qualify for the GS-11 grade level, you must have: I have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service which includes: Five (5) years of specialized experience maintaining and troubleshooting AC and DC power systems, conduit bending and threading, oscilloscope understanding and usage, and liquid filled battery maintenance.

            To qualify for the GS-12 grade level, you must have: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes: Ten (10) years of specialized experience maintaining and troubleshooting AC and DC power systems, conduit bending and threading, oscilloscope understanding and usage, and liquid filled battery maintenance.

      • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
        • One-year probationary period may be required.
        • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 0%
        • Appointment may be subject to suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Position is designated as Non-Sensitive-No access security clearance.
        • Position requires a valid state motor vehicle operator’s license and the ability to maintain the license for the duration of employment.

      This position is Mission Essential. Incumbent is not subject to administrative dismissal in emergencies created by inclement weather conditions or other emergency situations as appropriate.

      This position requires a pre-employment physical exam due to the physical requirement of the position.

      Required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing, or obtain within first year of employment.

      Required to acquire and maintain appropriate Corps of Engineers equipment operating licenses based on site specific requirements.

      Required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.

      Other Essential Information:

      • Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
      • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
      • This position is Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
