INTRODUCTION: Serves as a Park Ranger for Mark Twain Lake under the general supervision of Operation Managers and Program Leaders. Directly supports successful delivery of recreation and environmental missions.
About the Position:
Serves as a Park Ranger performing specific assignments that require a general knowledge of Resource Management programs such as recreation management, visitor assistance, natural resource management, and interpretation. May instruct and oversee lower graded employees to accomplish work and at designated times serve as a crew leader.

DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT/DUTIES: Perform as a Park Ranger at Mark Twain Lake, St. Louis District, Operations Division. The duties under this vacancy are the following:
- Recreation Management - Participate in the day-to-day operation of recreation areas. Patrols project land and water to ensure compliance with Federal regulations pertaining to parking, camping, noise level, sanitation, and safety. Completes visitation or facility inventory surveys and reports and tabulates data. Conducts non-complex compliance and utilization inspections, and review of specific phases of more complex inspections. Ensures compliance with terms and conditions of permit and/or license. Directs surveillance of project lands and waters, oversees enforcement of applicable laws and regulations governing the use of these resources and protection of the visitors.
- Visitor Assistance - Provides visitors with information concerning points of interest, travel routes, historical and natural features, and park activities. Assists visitors by performing search and rescue missions, first aid, and safety programs. Investigates and reports any violations or accidents. Brings problems or violations to the attention of visitors and, if appropriate, issues notices of violations.
- Natural Resources Management Program - Participate in natural resources management activities such as gathering data to be used in the development and updating of Operational Management Plans and/or Master Plans. Observes visitor use patterns and their effect on the resource. Performs activities such as fish and wildlife surveys, forest inventories, type mapping, firefighting prevention, suppression, controlled burning, encroachment and boundary line inspections. Tabulates data and provides input for yearly work plans including dollar amount, materials, and manhours needed to accomplish project/function. Makes recommendations for improvements where and when necessary. Assists with preparation and implementation of flood and disaster notification plans.
- Interpretative Program. Develops and presents various programs of interest to park visitors and conducts research of topics using sources such as records, books, and files. Interviews people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event when appropriate. Selects and organizes material to fit the purpose of a program and the type of group for which it is intended. Develops exhibits, updates brochures, and prepares press releases to alert the public about special events or unusual circumstances.
- General Administration. Participates in the preparation of various contracts for such items as cleaning, gate attendants, refuse removal, mowing, etc. Writes specifications, develops bidder lists, and coordinates the process with the District's Contracting Division. Performs inspection of work accomplished by contracts such as cleaning, mowing, gate attendant services, agricultural practices, and refuse removal. Resolves contractor problems at field level if possible. Prepares inspection reports and notes any deficiencies. Verifies completion of work and informs supervisor of any unusual problems.

Specialized Experience: One-year specialized experience at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
Conditions of Employment and Other Requirements:
- Position requires a considerable amount of physical activity while performing duties.
- Majority of work is conducted outdoors in all kinds of weather and over varying terrains, while minimal work is performed in an office setting.
- Incumbent will be required to wear appropriate uniform while on duty.
- Incumber will be required to perform firefighting duties.
- Must possess valid State motor vehicle operator’s license for the class of vehicles operated during normal performance of duties.
- This position is Non-Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Qualifications
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operation and maintenance of recreation areas, patrol and compliance activities, and/or fish/forestry/wildlife management experience. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education
Four year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
