Position Overview
The Walla Walla District US Army Corps of Engineers helps manage local water resources for navigation, flood damage reduction, disaster assistance, hydroelectric power generation, and other natural and heritage areas.
DUTIES
- Serve as an Architect in the Structural Design Section.
- Responsible for planning, designing, and constructing new, modified, and upgraded features of civil and military works projects.
- Determine features meet all requirements stipulated in State and Federal building codes as well as USACE and industry standards.
- Develop the scope of the problem and derive criteria to arrive at an optimum design when precedence has not been stipulated in any codes or standards.
- Design (both preliminary and final) for features of civil works projects including flood control, hydropower, fish passage, and recreational facilities.
- Design (both preliminary and final) for military works projects include office buildings, housing, storage warehouses, and specialized shops.
- Review designs and working drawings prepared by engineers/architects, A/E firms, and personnel from other Districts.
- Write technical specifications and draw construction documents with CAD software.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- TDY travel may be required up to 15% of the time.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document.Basic Requirements for Architect (0808):
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in architecture or in a related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were
in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) Related Curriculum - Degree in architectural engineering provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses specified in statement A above, or (2) Experience: 1 year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of any college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that you have acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements
listed below:
GS-11 Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience designing buildings and architectural systems; AND using CADD software. (Experience as a program/project manager is not qualifying.) (Specific experience must be well documented in resume).
GS-12 Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience designing buildings and architectural systems for new and remodeled commercial or industrial facilities; AND proficiency in the use of CAD software. (Experience as a program/project manager is not qualifying.) (Specific experience must be well documented in resume).
Physical Effort: The work is sedentary except for regular and recurring field surveys and construction site inspections. Such inspections involve a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, climbing, bending, and stooping.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed in an office setting although there are regular and recurring visits to building site locations during the construction supervision of design projects. Such visits expose the architect to a variety of hazards associated with construction activities, including high noise levels, dust, moving equipment, chemicals, etc.Additional information
