- Position Overview/Duties:
The Rock Island District's Engineering and Construction Division (EC) provides engineering and architectural analysis, designs, and services for the construction, operations, maintenance, and remediation of a wide range of water resource, infrastructure, and military projects to our District customers, partners and stakeholders. The District is currently seeking a Geologist. Responsibilities include:
- Planning and conducting field explorations, investigates site conditions, analyzes geologic data, and evaluates subsurface foundation conditions to provide recommendations for construction and rehabilitation projects.
- Developing three-dimensional geologic models for project site characterization.
- Compiling and organizing geological data into reports, including subsurface profiles, maps, and graphic documentation for geotechnical portions of project plans and specifications.
- Conducting field surveys to assess the condition of existing structures, identifying sources of distress, and recommending appropriate resolution for flood control, navigation structures, and other civil works projects.

- Other Conditions and Requirements:
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
Minimum Education Requirement for Geology series: A bachelor's degree in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. Minimum Experience Requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, which includes: 1) investigations for site characterization; 2) supporting technical analysis and reviews; 3) basic technical reporting. Selection can be made at the GS-07, GS-09, GS-11 or GS-12 level.
