Position Overview/Duties

Performs a variety of duties/tasks on items of floating plant such as towboats, barges, loading docks, etc. May include land plant and land facilities during layup periods. Typical duties include:

1. Handling lines in making and breaking tows and moorings to assure that boats, barges, and other plant equipment are tied securely; making soundings; setting gang planks; attaching and removing hoisting and hook lines; general housekeeping and related duties.

2. Operation of deck equipment such as power winches, water pumps, cables, checking and filling oil and greasing boat engines, power generator/engines, etc.; assisting in fueling operations by checking fuel levels and handling fuel hose and attachments to fill fuel tanks; assisting in minor repairs to boat and other equipment by performing basic tasks such as getting tools and supplies, carrying and lifting materials, etc. under the direction of a higher level employee.

3. Paint or assist in painting surfaces of floating plant working equipment such as exterior of barges, exterior and interior walls of river towboats, etc. The paint is typically oil-based, which requires following instructions for stirring and thinning. According to specific direction, uses various tools such as scrapers, sand, or brushes to prepare surfaces, such as by brush, roller, airless sprayer, etc.

4. Operates various vehicles such as an automobile/GVW 4000 lbs., pickup trucks/GVW 5100 lbs., four-wheel drive vehicle/GVW 7500 lbs., and may operate other vehicles such as a dump truck/GVW 22,000 lbs. or more. The vehicles are primarily used to transport soil, rock and other materials throughout the project, run errands or make deliveries of supplies, parts, etc. Drives primarily during daylight hours in fair and inclement weather conditions on regularly traveled roadways and/or gravel or dirt roads as well as public highways.

5. Operates motorboats up to 26 feet in length on rivers and lakes, used as mode of travel and transports passengers or delivers items to specified locations. Under close and constant direction, may fully operate motor vessel in licensed operator's presence, and may briefly steer the towboat to maintain position during the operator's absence. In an emergency, such as an accident, injury, or illness of or to the boat operator, may steer the boat and operate controls to land the craft without injury to personnel or equipment.

  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • You may be required to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • The incumbent may be required to file an OGE Form 450, Financial Disclosure Report upon entering on duty in this position and annually thereafter.
  • This position requires that the incumbent possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position may require shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the following training/certifications prior to employment or within a specified period of time after appointment:
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state-issued Driver's License, a Class 1 motorboat license, and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
