Position Overview/Duties

About: The Dalles Lock and Dam is one of the ten largest hydropower dams in the United States and provides the Pacific Northwest with a reliable water source for hydropower, navigation, recreation, fish passage, irrigation, and flood mitigation. The dam is 192 miles upriver from the mouth of the Columbia River and two miles east of the city of The Dalles, Ore. The project consists of a concrete structure with a navigation lock, spillway, gated powerhouse and fish passage facilities.

NOTE: This is an informal job opportunity for a non-competitive reassignment at the GS-05, GS07 or GS09 level.

Duties:

  • Plan and execute programs in recreation/natural resources management, visitor assistance, and interpretation services.

  • Consults with supervisor and other Portland District offices regarding policy matters and non-routine problems.

  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of a variety of natural resources conservation, recreation and environmental plans, programs, and procedures at a major multipurpose lake project.

  • Patrol project land and water areas to enforce T36 CFR rules and regulations through the issuance of verbal/written warnings and citations. Educate the visiting public on project purposes, conditions, policies and regulations.
  • This position may function as a Contracting Officer's Representative.

  • The incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind.)

One year of specialized experience, which may include 1) Applying knowledge of environmental, recreational, and natural resource management sufficient to carry out daily activities; 2) Providing visitor assistance based on conditions, policies, and regulations; and 3) Enforcing park and safety rules and regulations or a combination of education and experience may be used to qualify.

  • The incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid State Driver's License at the time of appointment.
  • Acquire a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license within 1 year of appointment.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
  • Possession of/or the ability to acquire Citation Authority within one year of hire.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical, and every three years thereafter.
