Position Overview/Duties
This job opportunity is open to CURRENT, PERMANENT USACE EMPLOYEES ONLY.
This opportunity is being announced through the USACE Voluntary Internal Opportunities Program (VIOP). Current, permanent USACE employees with noncompetitive eligibility to be placed in this position are eligible to apply. Position Overview/Duties:
Serves as a technical expert in health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), National Hazardous, Toxic Radioactive Waste (HTRW) Center of Expertise (CX).
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Maintains current knowledge of applicable DOE, NRC, EPA, OHSA, DOD, DA, and State/local news & regulations pertinent to health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk characterization and assessments for HTRW sites. Provides and maintains professional liaison with DOE, NRC, EPA, OHSA, DA, other USACE elements, and private experts in related radiation protection/health physics fields.
- Professional knowledge of health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment concepts, principles, and practices.
Provide complete and current health physics and radiation risk assessment program direction and technical guidance in accordance with DOE, NRC, DOD, EPA, and DA guidelines and regulations.
- Provide expert advice, review, support, and direction on a broad range of health physics/radiation protection safety/radiation risk assessment activities, some of which may require problem-solving wherein available methodologies are unavailable or inadequate.
- Develops, reviews, and recommends applicable technical policies, procedures, and other guidance materials pertaining to radiation protection safety, health physics, and radiation risk assessment aspects of HTRW projects.
- Provide technical review of health physics, radiation protection, safety and radiation risk assessments aspects of HTRW site investigation, pro-design, design, and remedial construction contract documents submitted by CX by HTRW design districts.
- Serves as a knowledgeable source of toxicological and health data for radioactive substances/wastes and for the interpretation of complex data relative to individual radioactive chemicals and mixtures of such chemicals for which health-related values have not been established.
Qualifications Requirements: To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. This education and/or experience must be described/reflected in your resume and/or transcripts.
Minimum Education Requirement:
(A). Degree in natural science or engineering that includes at least 30 semester hours of health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and /or calculus.
OR
(B) Combination of education and experience — courses shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
Minimum Experience Requirement: 1 year equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-12.
